The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) follows a structured selection process for the recruitment of Probationary Officers (PO) in various public sector banks. The selection process is divided into three stages:
1. Preliminary Exam (Phase I)
The first stage is the Preliminary Exam, which is a computer-based test designed to assess candidates’ basic aptitude and reasoning skills. It consists of three sections:
English Language (30 questions)
Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions)
Reasoning Ability (35 questions)
Total Marks: 100
Duration: 1 hour (60 minutes)
Marking Scheme: Each question carries 1 mark, and there is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer.
Qualifying Marks: Candidates need to clear the sectional as well as overall cut-offs to qualify for the next stage.
Note: The Prelims exam is only for shortlisting candidates. It is not considered in the final selection.
2. Main Exam (Phase II)
Candidates who clear the Preliminary Exam will be eligible to appear for the Main Exam. The Main Exam is more comprehensive and consists of Objective-type questions and Descriptive-type questions.
Objective Test (for 200 marks)

3. Interview (Phase III)
Candidates who clear the Main Exam will be shortlisted for the Interview round.
The interview is conducted for 100 marks.The minimum qualifying marks for the interview are 40% for General category candidates and 35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates.The interview panel typically consists of senior bank officials and experts in the field.
Note: Candidates who do not attend the interview or fail to qualify it will be disqualified.
Final Selection
The final selection is based on the combined marks obtained in the Main Exam (Objective + Descriptive) and the Interview.The final merit list is prepared by combining the marks from the Main Exam and Interview with a weightage ratio of 80:20 (80% for Main Exam + 20% for Interview).
